Mental health news clippings, 1971 [state publication].

This series consists of reprints from the Anniston Star of nine articles written by Frank Denton in 1971 on mental health in Ala. Tracing the history of the Dept. from the first patient at Bryce Hospital in 1861, the articles emphasize the current financial plight of the Dept. Also discussed are national events which influenced the development of the state's mental programs: the creation of the National Institute of Mental Health during President Truman's administration in 1946 and President Kennedy's concept of community mental health centers in 1963. The articles describe conditions at Bryce and Partlow, per-patient expenditures, differing treatment approaches, specific mental health centers, deficiencies in services to mentally retarded children, special education programs, and Governor Wallace's proposals for funding the Dept. before an impending legislative session.
